Why was Gettysburg the Turning Point of the Civil War?
Foods as well as other much needed supplies were cut off from the town. Animals like dogs, cats, horses, and sometimes even rats were reportedly becoming part of the diets of civilians and soldiers alike. Conditions for the town of Vicksburg became so unbearable that on July 3rd, , General Pemberton of the Confederacy rode out to discuss the terms of surrender of his army. The city of Vicksburg was so defeated by the surrender that they would not celebrate Independence Day thereafter until well into the 20th century. During the Siege of Vicksburg, Union and Confederate forces alike kept busy in their supporting roles on the Louisiana side of the Mississippi River.
To the growing Confederate activity in the area, Grant decided to respond by dispatching troops from the Vicksburg trenches across the Mississippi River. General John G. Many smaller battles were fought to prevent support to those in Vicksburg; one included an artillery battery targeting an iron foundry that was recasting spent Union artillery shells as the men returned to De Soto Point. The targeted foundry was destroyed on June 25th. The Confederates attacked a plantation and army training center run by former slaves. They destroyed the plantations and captured over a hundred former slaves before disengaging in the face of the Union army.
Confederate raids such as these were disruptive and caused damage, but they were only minor setbacks. They also showed the Confederates that they could only cause momentary disturbances in the area and ultimately would not halt the Union. Later in the Siege of Vicksburg, Union troops tunneled under the 3rd Louisiana Redan and packed the mine with 2, pounds of gunpowder, then proceeded to detonate it. The explosion destroyed the Confederate lines on June 25th, while an infantry attack followed the blast. The Union soldiers became pinned down while the defenders also rolled the artillery shells with short fuses into the pit with very deadly results. Union engineers worked to set up a casemate in the crater in order to extricate the infantry, and soon the soldiers fell back to a new defensive line.
From the crater left by the explosion on June 25th, Union miners worked to dig a new mine to the south and on July 1st this mine was detonated but no infantry attack followed the explosion. The full forty-seven day siege claimed many lives, but in doing so many were also saved. The Battle of Gettysburg, although a very important engagement between the Union and the Confederacy, was not the turning point of the American Civil War militarily. Pemberton no choice but to retreat to the defenses of the city of Vicksburg and hold out until much needed reinforcements could arrive. Finding it irresponsible to continue these frontal assaults, Grant decided to lay siege to the city of Vicksburg, ordering his men to dig a series of trenches to the Confederate standings.
The Battle of Gettysburg was not the turning point of the Civil War considering all that the Union achieved was prohibiting the Confederacy from proceeding north. The Siege of Vicksburg destroyed the Confederacy offensive and ultimately led to the end of the American Civil War with the North as the victors, the abolishment of slavery, and the beginning of the reconstruction of the south as well as the United States of America. For putting Lincoln, in charge the blame for the start of the war laid on the Republican Party for they imposed conditions that could not be fulfilled. The South cornered the Union to respond to a greater conflict on top of slavery. Gary W. He provided solid evidence on why he believed that the Civil War was not over slavery but over the Union. I provided evidence also that joined Gary W. The war was fought for the Union but, the Union attacked slavery because they knew that slavery was a dominant tool that the Confederates used.
Military and Political leaders have to make vital decisions during wartime that they believe will help their side in their war efforts. The Emancipation Proclamation was conceived as a military order that Lincoln believed would increase manpower in the Union Army. The conditions in late were grim for the Union Army, especially the Eastern Theatre, as the Confederates won the majority of crucial battles in the war so far. The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order that changed the status of slaves in Confederacy, once the slaves were in land controlled by the United States they were considered free. However, the Emancipation Proclamation applied to Blacks in the Confederacy, and it excluded the slave states that remained loyal to the United States Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri.
The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars in the history of the nations, this war not only shaped the nation, but it changed the face of America by abolishing slavery. Tension began to rise in the territories whether or not to permit slavery west of Mississippi, this became controversial because both the North and the South viewed this in a different perspective. The South was pro-slavery and they believed that it maintained their economy. Slaves helped them cultivate the land and made it easier for the southerners. In contrast, the North was against slavery and they believed that slaves were not needed, the North depended on manufacture and industrial work. Confederate defeat at the Battle of Antietam encouraged the publication of the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln.
Emancipation made a war that previously was for the preservation of the Union to a war on slavery McPherson The English and French who had just recently freed their slaves could not support a nation that endorsed slavery. The Battle of Antietam, for example, had less impact than the other two steps, but it still contributed to the cause. Later on, the preliminary proclamation would extinguish all support that Britain and France had for the South since they were against slavery. Something more important that the Battle of Antietam achieved was that it gave Lincoln the chance to issue the preliminary proclamation.
Besides preventing Britain and France from assisting the Confederacy, the preliminary proclamation also started a transfer of the war aim. His ideas and way of thinking was different than the original democratic, pro-slavery holding people thought. Lincoln made the right decision fighting for the civil war. I do not think there was another alternative. If he would have allowed the south to get away with seceding it would have given every state more power and believe that they had more control over the president. I think if they would have tried to reason with the south they would have pushed back harder and caught the northerners at a disadvantage because they would not have been prepared for any battles. Up until the Emancipation Proclamation, there were many different reasons for why the Civil War was being fought, because no one would acknowledge the real underlying cause.
The Union was anti-slavery and the Confederacy was pro-slavery, but neither acknowledged that this was a cause of the war.
