Yeah, Smash loves pistachios, so I made sure I got the two big family-sized bags just for him. Outside linebackers coach Mike Smith offered one of the more entertaining news conferences of camp when he explained why he walked into the media auditorium with a cast on his right arm.

He brought me a picture Packers pic. Remember, Smith was the same coach who earlier this offseason revealed he chipped a tooth while trying to fix some lawn equipment. It was the kind of entertaining moment that never would have seen the light of day last year, because all media conferences were via Zoom. Skip to main content Skip to navigation. Choose Blog Aaron Rodgers' 'Aston Martin,' a treehouse mishap and fun returns to Packers camp. He keeps his body in excellent shape. So I think God willing he could play for a long time. Silverstein : Everything coming together at perfect time for Packers. What do you think of the rest of his skill set such as throwing from the pocket and on the move, scrambling ability, decision making?

So this was really important for him. But the one thing he showed in college that we were excited about and his potential was his ability to play from the pocket but also with all the bootlegs and things that Matt likes to do. The one thing that was impressive to me was in his first action in so long was his ability to keep his eyes downfield and stay within the pocket and not get frantic in there. But I think it was a really positive summer. You might have to make that decision as early as next offseason.

Even with Aaron for three years we watched him grow and make incredible progress, we were coming off a year and we went with him as starter. I think inside the building we felt really good that it was just a matter of time, but until they go out there and do it — we had a quarterback in Brett Favre who never missed a game, right? You just hope they can hold up, there are just so many variables.

Hopefully we can make progress down the way on an extension. Why doesn't he have a new contract? Q: You said in camp that he and the team have different definitions of what the highest-paid receiver makes. A : Those things are pretty normal in the National Football League, and Russ Ball does a fantastic job of working with the agents and working through those things. Is this as close to Super Bowl or bust as it gets for this team?

This is no different. We think we have a very good team. Every year is a different year and the team has to set aside things and come together to be a team that can win a championship. But I like the personalities and the character of the men in that locker room to do that. Q: Last year your defense was No. Have you seen anything to think new defensive coordinator Joe Barry can improve on that?

A : First of all, super excited to have Joe here, he has a ton of energy and I love the way he attacks each and every day and the problem solving the coaches have to go through. Obviously Kenny Clark being healthy. I think natural improvement for where those guys are in their career would have happened, and bringing in Joe just adds a different element to it. Q: Do you think your shortcomings on run defense the last two seasons were more because of personnel or scheme? Have you seen anything Barry is doing that can turn that around? A : It all goes hand in hand. And I think some of our young linebackers are coming into their own. They have to be managed and often recur. Is this likely to be an issue for him all season?

A : I certainly hope not. We have a couple young running backs we think are going to be very nice complements to Aaron Jones. On defense we have a core nucleus of young players that are about to play their best football for the Green Bay Packers. That gets me sort of excited. Q: You had significant salary-cap restraints in free agency because of the pandemic and re-signing of Aaron Jones. Defensively do you think you made any personnel moves that will make a difference this season?

Slaton has done a nice job, in the slot Shemar Jean-Charles has done a nice job for us. He got off to a slow start because of a hamstring injury, but Isaiah McDuffie had a nice couple games in the last games of the preseason, not only on defense but on special teams. A : How Joe Barry is going to use those guys, I think we have a lot of options now, I think we have a little more versatile back end.
